Living your Dreams

As I sit back and reflect there are many thoughts going in my mind and today I would like to write on one special quality that we all can develop that will guarantee us greater success, accomplishment and happiness in life.  This quality is so important that, if we don’t develop it to a high degree, it is impossible for us to achieve what we are truly capable of achieving. The quality that I am talking about is the quality of self discipline.  It is a habit, a practise, a philosophy and a way of living.
All successful people are highly disciplined in the important work that they do.  And  then you develop the same levels of high, personal discipline possessed by the most successful people , you will very soon begin to achieve the same results that they do.All great success in life is preceded by long, sustained periods of focused effort on a single goal, the most important goal, with the determination to stay with it until it is complete.   Fortunately the quality of self discipline is something that you can learn by continuous practise, over and over, until you master it.  Once you have mastered the ability to delay gratification, the ability to self-discipline, to keep your attention focused on the most important task in front of you, there is virtually no goal that you cannot accomplish and no task that you cannot complete.
As you would know today’s business scenario &  work environment is fast paced & very dynamic. All of us have to work on multiple priorities and hence, it is even more important to practise self discipline and use multiple learning opportunities to your advantage.  I am going to share a simple tool which you can use and apply in your workplace or also in personal space to manage your time better. How do we build discipline in identifying goals?  This means that you sit down with a pad of paper, a pen and ample time.  You think through and then make a written list of all the things you want to accomplish in the next 2-3 years.  Organize the list by various areas of your life; your career, your money, your family, and your health.  You set priorities and re-write your lists so that your most important goals are at the top.  You then take a separate sheet of paper and you make a list of all the things that you can think of doing, right now, to move you toward the attainment of your most important goals. How many times you have made commitments to yourself? E.g. I will start my walks / jogs or start playing sports from tomorrow? And if you reflect most probably you will come to a realisation that you have not been able to stay committed to your resolution. Why does it happen like this? Research shows that we commit using logical side of our brain but when we make decisions using emotional side of brain. E.g. When we go to bed with a resolve that I will wake up at 5 am and start my 5km run then its logical side of the brain. But what happens when the alarm wakes you up at 5 am? It is not your logical side which wakes up but the emotional side which tells you – You had a late night and it is alright to sleep for some more time or you are fit and don’t need to worry too much about it etc. You can compare this with analogy of mahout (logical brain) trying to ride an elephant (emotional  brain).   And, hence it is important that the purpose driven prioritised goals which you have committed are kept somewhere where it is highly visible and will act as a reminder – On your workstation / Cabin or even in your cupboard.

Remember
Rider controls and gives direction to elephant which is 100 times its weight and in the same way we can also give direction to our goals if we remain focused and on track with the long term outcomes
